Falconer posted this on my OD&D boards and I thought it might make for a great discussion here. Below is his post and my reply on those boards. ------------------------------------------------------------------- To me, there are four “main” Star Wars films: - Star Wars
- Empire
- Jedi
- The Force Awakens
This is for the simple reason that I choose to think of Star Wars not primarily as a universe, and not as a ponderous, multi-generational saga, but simply as the space adventures of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. If you want a top 4 list I'm just curious why you didn't include Rogue One, as I see R1 as "Episode IVa" and ANH as "Episode IVb." Seems like Rogue One fits the cycle better than Force Awakens just because you could walk away from RotJ and feel satisfied. My list might be... 1. Rogue One 2. Star Wars 3. Empire 4. RotJ Not a final say, understand. Mostly brainstorming as I type.....

Here’s no Luke Skywalker or Han Solo in Rogue One — so it fails my stated criterion.
I also dislike Rogue One on several levels. I think the script is poor — plotting, characterization, and dialogue. And I think it integrates poorly with the themes and ideals of Star Wars ’77. The Rebels are portrayed as grimy, violent, and cowardly, which is at odds with the original’s brave, bright-eyed boys.

Mine is just the OT. For me they are all 5 out of five 5 stars films and I like absolutely everything about them (not an anti Ewok guy for example, which even some OT fans don't like). With regards to the rest of the movies, I haven't fully embraced any of them. I always seem to find something big or small I don't like about them. There is a lot to like in many of them, but none of them match the cinematic and world building quality of the OT. The only movie I despise deeply is The Last Jedi.
I am also fascinated with the "just Star Wars no ESB no RoTJ" viewpoint. But ESB and RoTJ are both superb films and part of my SW.

Out of your high recommendation, I am tempted to give the Thrawn trilogy a shot. I have become especially interested in those novels after I read you say that Zahn's Luke made you a better person.

Out of your high recommendation, I am tempted to give the Thrawn trilogy a shot. Do so. I'm sure some of it is nostalgia because there weren't any other Star Wars books out at the time, but I really enjoyed Zahn's trilogy. Seemed like they followed a logical progression of where the story might go after the movies and Zahn introduced some really iconic characters.

Zahn's original trilogy is the best Star Wars I've read to date, and I've read a lot of Star Wars. I'm talking about novels here, not comics. The best comic I've read (and there are several great Star Wars comics) is still Dark Empire, that came out in the 90's, published by Dark Horse. If you are into listening rather than reading, what you want to pick up is the 20th Anniversary production of Heir to the Empire over at Audible. CLICK HEREYou can listen to a sample there. It is a top notch production. I just finished my third listen to it. Great stuff. In this case, I actually like the audible version better than reading the books normally, because some of the characters came alive for me in a way that they didn't when I read the book. Like Talon Karde. I love the character now when I was so-so on him before I listened to this audio book. The "voice" that was given him is perfect. In my mind's eye, I almost see a younger Ricardo Montalban playing the part. You'll want to read the trilogy: Heir To The Empire Dark Force Rising The Last Command Then, you may want to read the duology: Spectre of the Past Vision of the Future

Over time I’ve come to love the duology even more than the trilogy. Maybe. Hard to say. I love them all. When I’m listening to the OT radio dramas, I’m looking forward to the Thrawn Trilogy, and when I’m listening to the Thrawn Trilogy, I’m looking forward to The Hand of Thrawn.

Started an audiobook that I couldn't wait to start, then, while listening to it, want to start a different one.
