I just watched it. Wasn't really inspired by it either, but it's a trailer so what can you expect. They follow a certain heartless formula by design. Nice things: It's nice to see old characters return. Eye rollers: the opening action shot with Rey and the interceptor. Luke's overdub is pointless sentimental hyperbole, but again: formula. Anyway, hopefully you-know-who gets to be in more than just a scene, and I'll bet two dollars that the whole thing hinges around some plot twist connection with Palpatine, which would be nice if McDiarmid returns. …Nevermind, just did a search and it turns out he is reprising his role as the Emperor. Nice!

The trailer blew me away. I think J.J. is going to save Star Wars with this movie.

I actually liked the teaser/trailer a lot. Even though it proves the sequel trilogy has failed, and only the OT characters can keep the hype going, at least it seems they are course correcting after the grave faults of TLJ. I hope I'm not wrong.

I showed the family the new trailer the day it came out. For the first time, we watched a trailer by streaming Youtube to an HDTV...Wow! I think it had an impact, our youngest got out the Star Wars figure collection without even asking me. We have a mix of figures - Kenner originals (some that are my originals, others I found later), a few '90s revivals, and ones from the new trilogy. My dad saved my original figures, but not the rest, so a few years ago I got them a giant BB-8 that turns into a Snoke Destroyer, which functions much like the original Kenner Death Star playset. Almost all of the new toys are one-figure spaceships, so it was great to find one that is an actual setting. It even has an Easter Egg - there's a small Trash Compactor illustration that has a dianoga eye poking out of it. My daughter actually figured out on her own that this was the same as the green "trash compactor monster" (a relic from my original Death Star). I nearly wept with joy...

Pretty interesting read, aside from a few odd editorial asides, I think it hit many of the right notes. But honestly: how many Not Tatooines do we really need? Obviously logic dictates there will be any number of desert worlds in the Star Wars galaxy, but this is a movie series, and a movie series relies on visual continuity as much or more than it does on narrative and background continuity.
Once you establish that frontier worlds in the Star Wars movies are each a different harsh habitat, then I think it would have been a stronger choice to keep the visual recognition that Barren Desert = Tatooine. I think Lucas generally got that right. In the first six movies, each time a new planet was introduced it was represented by a fresh landscape. If a landscape returned, it's because as viewers we have returned to that planet. Not quite realistic or logical, but definitely better for a cohesive narrative, and for producing a feeling of infinite variety in the galaxy.

Yeah, Jakku should have had more than just junked Star Destroyers to make it different from Tatooine. Heck, that could have been another part of Tatooine that we haven't seen yet.
There's lots of ways that they could have shown us, visually, that this was another world, and it still be a desert world.
