Rumor: Disney Considering Splitting Star Wars: Episode IX Into Two MoviesHonestly, I am in favor. TLJ left us with zero setup for a grand finale. Nobody has any speculations or excitement for Ep.IX. It’s hard to care about the characters when they have no chance for redemption or growth. It will never be possible to undo TLJ’s worst sins (making Luke pathetic and killing him off), but if Abrams is permitted to make two more movies in the saga, the optimist in me says they could be really excellent, which might just drown out the bad.

You just sold me, man. I'd be up for it. Rian didn't do his job. Contrast that with the fact that The Force Awakens has really grown on me. Yeah, let Abrams do his thing.

Heck, I wouldn't mind Episode IX starting like this...
LUKE SKYWALKER steps out of the shower, realizing that he has just had a Force Dream--the Force has shown him what could happen if he refuses the call of need by his sister and friends.
There is a familiar sound. Luke looks out the window and sees the Millennium Falcon landing. Chewie and Rey get out. Luke dresses and meets Rey at the top of the hill. She hands him the light saber.
Luke takes it.
Rey says, "We need you to help battle the First Order."
Luke smiles and shakes his head, "I know. I'm ready. Let's go."
And, the three of them leave--to join up with Leia and the rest of the Resistance.

I don't see why Episode 9 part 2 couldn't just be called Episode 10. These moves aren't really a trilogy (as in a single story told in three parts). The only reason Disney is calling it a Trilogy is that Lucas had an idea for three trilogies. But Disney has thrown away everything else from Lucas already.
The reason it made sense to split the last Harry Potter movie into two parts is that they were adapting a book that was longer than all the previous books. Lucasfilm isn't adapting anything. They are just making it up as they go along.

I agree. FWIW, only the PT movies used the episode number in the actual movie title. I do wonder if there’s a contractual issue, though. They have the cast, and John Williams, etc., under contract to make one film. Does the “Part 1 / Part 2” thing mean it counts as one movie for purposes of those contracts? If not, they will have to renegotiate.

I actually signed out from Disney Star Wars some weeks after Last Jedi. Why I found the movie enjoyable to watch, after some further considerations I realized that I really don't care for this new continuity. I don't see myself ever returning to it, regardless of what they are now trying to fix the issues with the plot. It's the overall style that feels completely wrong and I doubt they will be doing a clean cut and do something that picks up where Return of the Jedi left us.

So far TFA is the only thing to come out of Disney that I like. And even that feels like an “alternate dark future” that I can only partially accept in my headcanon. The hardest thing to swallow was Han’s lightspeed jump to inside the Star Killer’s shield. I mean come on. But, the music is great, the three main characters (Rey, Finn, Han) put in excellent performances, and by and large it has a lot of Star Warsey stuff I liked; and with its references to the Unknown Regions it even tied in with the direction Zahn was going. Based on that, I will watch Abrams’ next movie, but I don’t expect to love it. As I said, you can’t undo what TLJ did to Luke, and that makes anything post-TLJ really hard to accept.

So, I think we can all assume this isn’t actually going to happen like this, but, is there a non-zero chance that they could fudge a bit and say Luke didn’t actually die at the end of TLJ?

I think the chance is zero, but I'd vote for it! The Force is powerful! A Destiny not fulfilled--that sort of thing.
Plus, it would be a HUGE SURPRISE.

TV’s Game of Thrones bravely kills off characters, and brings them back to life in the next season.

Personally, I think the most straightforward solution would be to have Luke's Force spirit included as a main character, rather than as the usual two-scene guest star. It wouldn't feel like an obvious panic restart, it still lets Luke play his part, and it allows them to one-up themselves with a whole new set of über Jedi powers.

It's got to be Luke, whole human.

I guess they could conceivably spin a way to bring Luke back from the dead, like he went into hyperspace limbo instead of turning into a Force ghost.

They can't bring Luke back from the dead--not with what Yoda says about his own death in TESB.
