Star Wars news:
Disney is gearing up for its steaming service. They're going to have a 10-part show, live action, and they're spending $10 Million an episode on this sucker. $100 Million for the series.
But the theatrically released films may not be on the site! At least not at first. A couple of years ago, Disney sold the rights to show the films to TNT for a quarter billion bucks. They're negotiating again.
And, in comics, the old Dark Horse series, Rogue Squadron (also a series of books) becomes canon, and the name of the squadron is officially linked to the movie, Rogue One.

Well, Thrawn is used while Heir to the Empire is made impossible. No reason to not have Rogue Squadron and the characters without using any of the events.

Like Thrawn, I think that the squadron is becoming canon, but their Dark Horse adventures are not canon. Something like that.

Seems like a no-brainer.

Yeah, why recanonize some comics you've already been selling in anthologies when you can make new comics that nobody has yet?
Considering the timing of the news with the streaming service, I wonder if they're intending to make Rogue Squadron into a Rebels-style TV show.

Or a live-action TV show!

If that's what they're planning to spend $10 million an episode on, then they could certainly pull it off!
Edit: If so, my guess is it will be tied to the Rebellion era squadron rather than during the New Republic era of the books & comics (is that even a thing anymore?). Maybe even an origin story. However, if they went that route then I imagine they'd have to write Luke's role out of it.

Star Wars is like the comic book franchises, in a way. The further away you get from the original premise of a thing, the more you alienate all but your most hardcore audience. So, to a large degree I think reboots and reimaginings and remixes were inevitable. The OT will always be at the heart of Star Wars. I just think WEG and Bantam did the best job of a OT-derived expansion. (The original Marvel comics did the best job of a SW77 expansion… until ESB topped them.)

The further away you get from the original premise of a thing, the more you alienate all but your most hardcore audience. Falconer is wise. I'd say that Rogue Squadron is a great example of this for me, in that I knew it was out there and had some friends who read it but it was far enough on the fringes of Star Wars that I never got around to reading the books myself. I prefer to stick to the OT and the main characters therein, and the farther we go from there the less "Star Wars-ey" it feels to me.

I started reading the first novel, though, and Rogue Squadron is pretty good. I did not like the comic.

I love the X-Wing books, and while they are on the “fringe” of the Luke-Han-Leia stories, they get into a side of the OT that I really love—the starfighter battles. For me, the books really start getting good with the 4th one, and the 5th book (Aaron Allston’s Wraith Squadron) is GREAT and super RPGey.
