In the past few years Disney has been slowly reprinting the original Marvel series as part of their "Epic Collection" line. Two volumes are out so far, with the third scheduled for later this month. These include some bonus material --- mostly from UK comics --- that were not found in the previous Dark Horse reprints of this material, though this material may have been in other DH collections like Devilworlds. Star Wars Legends Epic Collection: The Original Marvel Years Vol. 1, Oct 2016, 496 pages Collects "Star Wars (1977) #1-23 and material from Pizzazz #1-16 and Star Wars Weekly (UK) #60." (issues #1-6 are the adaptation of A New Hope) www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Legends-Epic-Collection/dp/1302902210Vol. 2, July 2017, 448 pages Collects "STAR WARS (1977) 24-38, ANNUAL 1; STAR WARS WEEKLY (UK) 94-99, 104-115" www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Legends-Epic-Collection/dp/1302906801Vol. 3, July 2018, 488 pages Collects "STAR WARS (1977) 39-55; EMPIRE STRIKES BACK MONTHLY (UK) 149, 151, 153-157; STAR WARS MONTHLY (UK) 159" (issues #39-44 are the adaptation of Empire Strikes Back) www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Legends-Epic-Collection/dp/1302911333* * * * * I have the first volume (and second on order), and it's a high quality reprint. * * * * * Update: Vol 4. is due out in Aug 2019. Collects "STAR WARS (1977) 56-73, STAR WARS ANNUAL (1979) 2" www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Legends-Epic-Collection/dp/1302918494There were 107 issues of the original Marvel SW, so that leaves 34 issues remaining, which they can probably fit in to two more Epic Collections?

I have the first two. I had the Dark Horse collections (1 & 2 and “Wild Space” for the UK stuff), but I like these new ones better.

Anybody else have any of the giant tabloid sized versions? My sister had my #1 for years, and I reclaimed it from her some time ago....Also have the Battle Star Galactica #1.

This one? www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Original-Marvel-Omnibus/dp/0785191062Yeah, I lusted for it for years, but actually I like the newer Epic Collections better. They’re more chronological (incorporating the contemporary UK issues in each volume rather than lumping them at the end). And while I do like these, I am not a big enough comic book fan to shell out the big bucks for a giant hardcover, which takes up too much space on my shelf and is unwieldy to actually read, anyway.

Ooh, thanks for that Zenopus, I'll have to get these! I was a huge fan of this comic back in the day, the first series I really followed (and the last, at least for that amount of issues).

I'm almost done with the entire Marvel run. It's been a fantastic ride. These Marvel comics truly capture the feel of the original trilogy. I really, really like 'em.
I'm on issue #94 of the 107 issue run. I collected the Dark Horse reprint omnibuses when they came out.
Great reads.

Awesome. Which stories were your favorites?
I went straight to Ord Mantell and read the first half last night. I love how it well it meshes with the Han & Luke competing for Leia storyline of ESB.

It's been a while (total of 5 omnibuses--over 10 years of comics) since I've read the early stuff, but I really liked it. Like few other resources, the early stories had that wide-eyed, anything goes, wild space opera feel providing that atmosphere I felt about Star Wars when I was a kid and there was only one movie called Star Wars.
I loved it.
Then, the book matures a bit. I think the middle part is my favorite. The art got a lot better. Lots of the stories were two, three, or more issue arcs. I thought that was cool. Plus, they'd bring back characters and story ideas from past issues. That stuff is cool.
I think my least favorite is what I'm reading right now--it's why these last 2.5 issues aren't read yet. The story started off OK, but it is starting to drag. It's like they were just throwing something together because they knew the book was ending. The art is the worst, there at the end, than in any other part. Coloring is pastels. The "enemy" is either silly or boring. I'm ready for it to be done.
For the most part, the series is fantastic.

I have a collection of the Russ Manning newspaper strips, but honestly it doesn’t hit the same sweet spot as the Archie Goodwin Marvel books, for me. For that reason I am thinking of picking up a collection of the Archie Goodwin newspaper strips. They have a very high reputation. And like his Marvel stories, they are set pre-ESB, which is great!

I agree about the Russ Manning stuff. It was not near as good as the Goodwin run. Art was better on Goodwin run, too.

Well, I finished the Marvel run! I have closed the cover on the Number Five omnibus. The last issue, number 107, is a strange one. It skipped ahead (I think) some number of years. Evidently the Tof threat got bigger, and the Alliance of Free Worlds joined with the Nagai and the remnant of the Empire to defeat the Tof invasion. Luke is shown with his shirt off, long hair, and a headback that makes me think of Stallone in Stayin' Alive. He's carrying this huge blaster rifle that is about the size of the smart guns used in Aliens. They all battle on this planet that reminds me of future Earth in Terminator. I don't know if this was always part of the plan, but I get the feeling that the writers had more story planned out about the Tof invasion. They seemed to pull all the threads together in this one issue as if the book was suddenly canceled on them. This issue came out in September. The Tofs are, by far, the silliest characters in the entire original Marvel run. I can see why the book was canceled. The writers spent a lot of time on the Nagai invasion, which has some cool parts, but it just went on too long. And, the art and coloring really suffered. Now, the Tofs are drawn as these large, bigger than human, fat guys dressed like 17th Century Pirates and speaking like 1970's mafia types. Their huge star destroyer sized ship is shaped--no kidding--like a 17th Century sea galleon. It is real crap. I was so sorry to see Star Wars go to this--when the Marvel run had been so damn good. The silly Tofs, with their clubs, dressed like pirates. These guys are invading from another galaxy, and the entire Alliance is afraid of them. No wonder the book was cancelled. Yep, that's their star destroyer sized vessel. It looks like a 17th Century galleon. Oh, brother. They have the tech for a ship this big to bring them from another galaxy, yet their hand weapons are clubs. They don't have blasters and had to learn how to use captured blasters. Double Oh brother.
