A Question to Ponder...
One of the reasons I like reading these old EU books is because they were written before the prequel films. One of the shocks I got with the prequels was that the Empire was only 19 years old. I had always gotten the feeling that the Empire had been around longer than that. Maybe 50 years, or even a hundred. The novelization of A New Hope certainly gives that impression. I remember thinking of how Battlestar Galactica borrowed from Star Wars, and how the beginning of that novelization spoke of how long the humans and Cylons had been at war.
In Timothy Zahn's book, Dark Force Rising, Luke speculates on the age of the Emperor. Knowing that he had been around during the Outbound Flight Project, Luke wondered if Palpatine was a hundred years old.
The feeling was that the Empire was old. Not as old as the Republic, but older than one generation.
Then, on the other hand, we knew that Vader was once a Jedi Knight. And, though we could speculate that Palpatine had kept his life long after he should have died, probably through using the Dark Side of the Force (or he was just one of many Emperors, as noted in the novelization to A New Hope), I never really got that impression about Darth Vader. He was a man who was a Jedi Knight and somewhere along the way, went to the Dark Side when Luke was young or before Luke was born.
And, if that is the case, then Jedi Knights existed under the Empire.
After all, it was Vader who helped the Emperor hunt down and kill the Jedi, according to Obi-wan.
So, that's my question. How could the Jedi operate under the Emperor?
Obviously, Lucas thought about this and decided that they didn't--they the Jedi fell when the Republic fell.
But, again, that's not the original indication of sources that came out pre-prequel.
What are your thoughts on this?
How would the Empire exist with the Jedi Knights still active and powerful?
