Return of the Jedi Novelization
I'm finishing it. I just have a few more pages. Vader has thrown Palpy down the pipe. Solo & Co. have just knocked out the shield.
I said earlier in the thread that I like the slightly darker treatment of the Ewoks. I get the feeling they won through sheer bravery and sheer numbers. It was a bit of a Pyrrhic victory.
I never hear this before: The Empire employed one communications ship--a capital ship. The Rebels threw everything they had at it. Rebel cruisers blasted away at it, until they were destroyed. The Rebels used cargo ships filled to the brim with explosive. They crews would set the ships on a collision course and then, at the last possible moment, they'd eject using the escape pods. The ship would ram against the Empire's ship and explode.
Still, the comm ship remained operational. After all that. But, the Shields were taken down, and the ship was finally crippled enough so that the starfighters could do some damage. Calrissian, in the Falcon, leads the fighters in, and they finish off the ship.
When it goes down, Ackbar, in Home One, the Rebel Command ship, sees that the Death Star shield is still up.
The Empire's comm ship provided jamming for the entire Imperial Fleet and the combat area. The jamming disappeared when it blew.
On the one hand, I like the novelization for A New Hope the best, but that's only because it is so different from the movie. The novelization for The Empire Strikes Back is much closer to the movie, but it still has some interesting extended scenes.
The Return of the Jedi novelization also has some new and extended scenes, but I'd say it's the closest to the movie. But, I will also say that the RotJ novelization is better than the movie, because of the treatment of the Ewoks and scenes like that I describe above.
