While watching the three movies on video certainly made a big impression on me, the thing that really made me a commited Star Wars fan was without a doubt playing X-Wing. It was the very first game I got when we got a first computer at home after having played it for hours and hours at a friend's house after school. I think it was also what hooked my brother as well.
But as great as it was, I think Tie Fighter was the better game in every way. There are good reasons why it still often comes up as the second or third best Star Wars game ever made. And unlike X-Wing, I actually managed to finish that one.
And the best thing about Tie Fighter is that it is still the only Star Wars game ever in which you play a loyal imperial soldier who does not switch sides to the Rebellion halfway through the campaign. Why? It's awesome! Do that again!

Sounds rad. I forswore video games decades ago, but everything I’ve heard about X-Wing and TIE Fighter really make me want to play them.

Pah, those rebel scum and their alphabet soup fighters. Tie Fighter was where it was at! Sitting in a tiny unprotected bubble with only a couple of cannon at your disposal, now that's a test for a real hero of the empire!
Yes, I played far more Tie Fighter than X-Wing, and when I did play the latter, Y-Wings were always my favourite.

Y-Wings were always too sluggish. If you have to fly a bomber, then the massive power of a B-Wing was the way to go.

Same reason I liked Tie Fighters and Tie Bombers most in the other game, as opposed to the much more powerful (made up) Star Wing. To he honest, though, I loved Y-Wings since I first saw them, so I freely admit to being biased on that front. I always see them as the Hurricanes vs. the X-Wing Spitfires - I guess I always liked the underdog in that sense.

Tie Defender was a mistake. One thing I loved in The Last Jedi were the new bombers. That was the most classic Star Wars feeling thing put in a movie since Return of the Jedi. They make no sense from an engineering perspective, but if you're into that stuff, you immediately recognize them as reprsenting B-17s. And when I looked up what they are named, it's actually B/SF-17.
That's what Star Wars had been missing for the last 20ish years. Recognizing that it is really a reimagining of 30s to 50s adventure fiction. It doesn't save the rest of the movie, but I thought that was awesome.
And speaking of Tie Fighters. This is the best videogame movie adaptation I've ever seen.
Barely any of the commenters seem to recognize it, but this thing doesn't just have the cockpit displays of Tie Fighter, I think it even captures the way ships move in the games. That X-Wing pilot trying to pull up to shake the Tie Fighter behind him. I've been there hundreds of times.

Speaking of which, my friend has finally figured out how to get the GOG version of X-Wing vs TIE Fighter to work multiplayer. I haven't played it with him yet, but he's shown me footage and it looks like a blast. I can't wait until our next computer game day.

What sort of controller is ideal for these games? Joystick?
You know, we have a lot of conversations about what was it that reignited interest in Star Wars in the 90s, and I really want to say these games did so as much as anything. I know I liked the movies, but after when these games came out my peers all of a sudden knew stuff about Star Wars on a deeper level. Like, what s-foils were.

I know I liked the movies, but after when these games came out my peers all of a sudden knew stuff about Star Wars on a deeper level. Like, what s-foils were. Yeah, that’s true. With games like X-Wing, Rebel Assault and Dark Forces, even people who didn’t own The Guide to the Star Wars Universe suddenly knew a whole lot of Star Wars lore. Joystick and keyboard is the best method, but you really only need a cheap, simple piece: stick, trigger and two or three buttons. You can’t really customize the controls, so anything more complex will be wasted on it. You can technically play with just a keyboard and mouse, and I did for a few weeks back in the day, but I highly un-recommend it. The game is designed for a stick. It was made at a time when it was basically assumed that anyone who played games on a computer would have a joystick, so mouse & keypad support is pretty much nonexistent.

Never been able to get by reflexes around those modern cross-key controllers, either.
