Something I noticed...
In Attack of the Clones, Obi-wan uses a lightsaber with a green blade. Anakin uses a blue blade.
In Revenge of the Sith, both have blue blades.
At first, I was wondering if the color had something to do with rank...
Purple - head of the Order - Mace Windu
Green - Jedi Master
Blue - Jedi Knight or Padawan
Red - Sith
But, then when I saw Obi-wan go from green to blue, my thought about rank made no sense.

Yeah, that stuff has always puzzled me.
Back in the 70's I was certain that blue-white meant "good" (Jedi) and red meant "evil" (Sith). When Luke lost his and made one in green, I figured that green meant "neutral" which was cool since at the time I thought that what made Luke special was the ability to use both sides of the Force.
Then things went color-nutzo. Purple didn't fit my color pattern, and it seemed a lot like folks just used whatever color they wanted most of the time.

Luke used a synthetic crystal to construct his lightsaber in RotJ (scene cut from the movie but elaborated in the Radio Drama and in the novel Shadows of the Empire); I think that might have been the original story justification.

I don't remember anything about lightsaber colors besides blue-white, red and green until The Phantom Menace. I know Samuel L. Jackson agreed to his role on the stipulation that he could have a purple lightsaber, so I wonder if that's what helped spark the idea of making lightsaber color a more personal choice to fit the visual design for each character.
Before that I had also thought the colors were there to show alignment. Republic Jedi have blue, Rebel Jedi have green, Sith have red. Oddly, the starships are reversed: Imperial ships shoot green and rebel ships shoot red. I figured Republic ships would still shoot blue or something. Maybe independents would shoot yellow-white, and have yellow-white lightsabers.
