I get the fact that he wanted to clean up old film and remove scratches, and that he wanted to update some scenes to more fully encompass the "vision" that he says he wanted at the onset, but it really bothers me that when the films were updated they still looked older than the prequel films. I look at my Star Trek TOS DVD collection and the remastered DVD collection and it was really clear that some major work had been done. The scenes were brighter, the starships looked more realistic, the planet orbit scenes looked dramatically improved, and other types of improvements went into the remaster process. I suppose this is the wrong board to discuss the TOS remasters and whether they are a good thing or a bad thing, but anyone viewing both can clearly see that the remastered versions look a lot better. I feel like Star Wars didn't get that treatment. The CGI creatures added into Mos Eisley look rather 2D. The add-in Jabba doesn't quite look right. The graphics for the Falcon's quad gunner viewscreen still look like some old 1980's video game screen. Whether or not Lucas should have done a remaster, if he did one it should have looked a lot more impressive. The special effects still never came up to the standards of movies I-II-III, even with the re-do. What does anyone else think about this? Did the quality of the Star Wars remasters live up to expectations? Oh, and Han shot first no matter what the current version says.

I have the remasters on DVD but I rarely watch them. I prefer the un-screwed with theater versions I have on my laptop.
That being said, I can see cleaning up scratches and whatnot, but anything else is media prostitution in my book.

I have the 2-disc DVD sets with the originals and the special editions. These days I watch the excellent high-def versions of the originals which can be found on the internet.
I will say that at the time, the theatrical re-release was so cool. The changes were kind of exciting because the idea was to make them less dated, but the result of course in the long run is that the special editions are now way more dated than the charming originals.

Finarvyn, have you seen the ST:TOS Blu-ray? You can watch with or without the digital effects. Everything looks gorgeous!

I really would want to have a new clean scan of the original theatrical release reels on Blueray. That's the version I would always want to watch.
The problem with the new additions is that many of them are incredibly akward and cringy. That Jabba added to Episode 4 not only looks bad, it also introduces the bad slapstick cartoony humor of Episode 1 with making Han step on Jabba's tail. And having Boba Fett glare at the camera is obvious blatant fan service. And then there is of course that stupid music number in Episode 6. I really can not watch that. I have to skip ahead every time I get there. That one was the main factor why I hunted down the Despecialized Edition files. And Anakin turning young as a force ghost in the DVDs that I have. They look terrible, but at least it's more or less the original movies.
Cleaning up is good, and slightly brushing up the color mixing is also okay. But beyond that, making actually new additions or changes should not be done.

Agreed. Part of what made them so special, in my opinion, was the fact that they were released on the big screen. This allowed me to take my son to see them in a theater instead of just watching them on the telly. Big difference. I wish they would release cleaned-up versions of the originals on DVD. Those would be my go-to.

Finarvyn, have you seen the ST:TOS Blu-ray? You can watch with or without the digital effects. Everything looks gorgeous! I've heard of them, but have never seen or owned them. When my son moved out he took his PS3, which was my Blu-ray player as well as his video game system, so all I have at home are regular DVD players. Also, since I already own the DVD and remastered DVD I'm unlikely to buy a third version. But everything I've heard says that the Blu-ray is better than what I own.

I wish they would release cleaned-up versions of the originals on DVD. Those would be my go-to. I heard the reason we still didn't get them is because the original theatrical release for Episode 4 had different distribution agreements than all the other films that followed. The owners of Star Wars can redistribute the altered special editions in whatever way they like, but for the original cut they would have to work out a special agreement with the original owner of those rights.
But companies sharing profits is something they seem to be very uneager to do, with nobody making any profit being prefered, so the required effords to negotiate a satisfying agreement have not been taken yet. Which seems silly. There seems to be a big market for rereleases of director's cuts, and with Star Wars a non-director's cut release should be selling just as well. Even if they were to keep 0% of the profits for the Episode 4 DVD, they still could keep 100% of the profits for 5 and 6.

I have to agree with Falconer that the re-release was a very exciting time. Over the years, of course, a lot of the additions seemed more and more out of place, to the point tht the only ones I really like now are the cloud city sequences, with the addition of windows and such to really bring out the idea that you're floating in clouds, not in space. Even those, though, have issues, such as the skylights in Han, Leia, and Chewie's quarters which let in a lot of light but somehow don't really brighten up the characters. This is definitely disappointing when Lucasfilm at that time was all about the effects, the quality is really not as good as it could have been. Certainly the cartoon-comedy elements like the droids and jawas in Mos Eisley, and that execrable musical number in Jabba's palace, deserve to be excised from memory.
