RE: Leia
I've never felt that the character of Leia lived up to her potential, no matter what form of story we happened to find her inhabiting: movie, comic, novel, short story.
She's royalty! Why didn't they do something with that? I think of Dune. I think of Game of Thrones. I think of Elric! There's so much intrigue that could have been given to us through that character.
Maybe Lucas & Co. kept the character in check by never approving anything that would take Leia to a new place (other than sidekick to Luke and Han).
There aren't three stars in Star Wars. There are only two. Luke and Han. Chewie and Leia are sidekicks, along with Ben, the mentor.

RE: Star Wars Heir to the Empire Behind The Scenes I really enjoyed this. As I said above, my appreciation of Zahn's writing when up several notches after listening to the care and work he put into getting that first Star Wars book "right". If you want to listen to a free exerpt, then CLICK HERE.

I actually managed to get the whole thing, my public library has the audiobooks! I've been listening to it off and on since last night, it's a great listen.

I just bought DEFINING A GALAXY. Unfortunately, it's not on audiobook. I'll have to read this one the old fashioned way.

I’ve been reading GRRM all year, but I am jonesing to get back into Star Wars (which for me means a re-read/listen of Daley and Zahn and maybe X-Wing). Soon!

Yeah, and if you think about it, thanks to Alderaan being destroyed with all of the other royalty, she's actually Queen! Maybe there was no one left who could legitimately perform the ascension ceremonies, that's why she stayed a princess.

Or, it could be that Alderaan has some sort of Lucas-Naboo-Democratic royalty where positions might be called "Queen" but are elected.

True. Of course, even with Alderaan destroyed, presumably there'd be a diaspora out there somewhere, even if they are scattered. In Truce at Bakura there's a scene where Leia encounters an Imperial officer whose accent and looks immediately mark him as Alderaanian. He treats her like true royalty in his brief scene. In the beginning of Jedi Search, which I'm now reading, it refers to some event where Han won a planet in a card game, and gifted it to Leia and the Alderaanian survivors (I'm guessing that's a tie-in with the Dark Horse comics).
So you might expect there to be an Alderaanian government in exile, and Leia is the Princess of the Alderaanian People, not necessarily the physical place. Who better for them to elect as their Monarch of the People in Exile than Leia? That would have made a cool story arc, I think.
