Quick Modifiers
During my 1E gaming, I've come to rely on two quickie modifiers: +2 and +5.
If you want to give an advantage to a character, then use the +2 modifier. Either add it to the roll or subtract it from the target number.
If you want to give a clear, overwhelming advantage to a character, then use the +5 modifier.
Quick n easy.
"Hey, the PC served time in an Imperial holding cell with a Wookiee and learned a lot of the Wookiee's language!" Sounds like an advantage to me. +2 modifier to understand Wookiee growls.
"Hey, the character grew up on a Water World." +5 to all Swimming checks.
"Hey, the PC that is sneaking around is wearing all black clothing." If the moon is out and bright, it's a +2 to difficulty for Search checks to detect him. If there is heavy cloud cover or no moon, then the difficulty is increased by +5.
